What are you aiming to build?
We want to release the world's (hopefully) first Digitally Enhancedl Role Playing System (DERPS for short - say it like Homer from The Simpsons)
What's a DERPS?
It is a modular software program, which grants Game Masters full use of modern computers, without changing the freeform collaborative nature of TableTop Role Playing Games. We are trying to answer the question "What would TTRPGs look like, if Gygax and Arneson had a laptop in the 1970s?".
Will it be a digital version of an existing TTRPG, such as Pathfinder or Blades in the Dark?
We do not intend to digitize dice, pen and paper systems, to avoid inheriting their limitations, at least not at first. In future, we might try this out.
Is this just another AI GM?
Game Masters enjoy TTRPGs as much as players, and we do not intend to replace them. However, we might include it in a secondary capacity, such as converting narrative prompts into setting appropriate responses.
What problems are you trying to solve?
Most pen, paper and dice systems share a number of limitations: - TTRPGs need mechanics to fuel immersion, but there is a tangible limit to number of systems GMs and players can keep track of. - Lets face it, no one plays TTRPG to do math and track variables. Aside from being a chore, they can significantly slow down gameplay, especially in more complex systems. - As a partial consequence of previous points, each TTRPG system usually focuses heavily on one mechanic (such as combat in DnD) at the expense of others. There is no easy way to import mechanics from one system to another and each system has a learning curve to overcome. - The truly titanic world crafting efforts of hardcore homebrewers are often enjoyed only by their players. Even if shared online, adopting someone else's ideas into your game requires a lot of effort.
What are the main features?
- Shift the burden of calculating outcomes of all simulated actions from Game Master to a computer. - Allow GMs to create their own game system from a selection of integrated modules, to match game mechanics with player interests. - Empower GMs to build their own game modules and sell them to other fans via a curated marketplace. Stagehand will come fully equipped with modding tools and a license allowing homebrewers to make their own modules and sell them to other fans!
What is a module?
The word “module” wears many hats. It can be: - A stand alone mechanical module, such a way to track provisions and player nourishment during journeys. - It can have other modules as dependencies, such as a cooking module, which needs the nourishment module to work. - A content-pack module, which adds Chinese and Indonesian recipes and dish art to the cooking module. - A campaign module, which tasks the party for preparing an imperial feasts, using all previous modules as dependencies.
Is Stagehand a program or a service?
It will be a software program, installed locally on GM's laptop or PC. It will consist of a software platform, running a selection of integrated game modules, each simulating an aspect of gameplay (travel, long term health, market prices, etc
Will I need a powerful PC to run it?
No - an old laptop should be fine.
How much will Stagehand cost?
The stagehand platform and modding tools will be released free of charge. Furthermore, its base code will be publicly available, to encourage collaborative development with the third-party modding community.
How do you plan on making money?
Our main revenue source will come from the sale of our in-house game modules via an online marketplace, as well as a commission charged on the sale of third-party modules made by homebrewers.
What about modules created by fans for personal use?
Totally free. We will only charge royalties/store fees once the homebrewer decides to profit from their work.
